Eclipse Data

The LHSN community enjoyed our observations of the Great American Eclipse last week. We were able to view the eclipse when the moon covered about 25% of the sun in the early stages of the event. We viewed the eclipse when 99.9% of the sun was covered. We viewed the eclipse again in the late stages and saw the moon covering about 33% of the sun. The LHSN community noted a number of other details at the maximum stage of the eclipse. It seemed to be somewhat cooler at the time. We noticed a definite reduction in light and then increasing light as the eclipse moved on past the maximum stage. We noted chimney swifts gathering in the sky as if evening was occurring. We heard cicadas beginning to sing. A report was made of an owl hooting to our north. We saw Venus to the west of the covered sun. We noted a sunset effect on the horizon even though it was only 1:18 in the afternoon. Several people noted crescent shaped shadows under trees.

Senior Ted Laesch and Mr. Kersten collected data on temperature fluctuations and light intensity fluctuations throughout the day. We purposely placed our temperature sensor in direct sunlight and recorded the temperature fall from 36.6°C (97.9°F) to 29.8°C (85.6°F). That represents a drop of 12.3°F during the eclipse. Pretty amazing! A graph of the temperature vs. time is shown.

We also saw a drop in light intensity from approximately 70,000 lumens/meter2 to 50 lumens/meter2 and then an increase after the eclipse to 85,000 lumens/meter2. This graph shows the drop.

We were glad to have a chance to see the majesty and might of our God in action in the sky above us. We live in a tremendous creation and it is fun to learn about it!

Scripture Verse

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!..When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:1,3-4

Under the Lights!!

Lutheran North’s first home football game of the season will be played against Orchard Farm on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 7:00 pm!

Due to an extremely generous gift from LHSN alumnus, Mr. Bill LaMothe (c/o ’72), field lights have been added to the Crusader Stadium! Mr. LaMothe’s designated donation funded the entire cost of the lighting as well as a new scoreboard, which will be in place soon. Additional donations from Mr. LaMothe and other Crusader supporters will allow us to install sufficient roadway lighting as well.

A brief dedication ceremony will precede the game this Saturday, beginning at 6:30. Please come to celebrate the additions, show our gratitude, and then cheer our Crusaders on to victory! Don’t forget to proudly wear your maroon and gold!

Principal’s Posting

I want to thank all Crusader parents who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the Back-to-School Afternoon. Faculty members spend much time and effort to help parents understand what their children are doing on a daily basis at LHSN. We greatly appreciate involved parents!

If you did not attend, please stop by the office and pick up the handouts from that day. Also, be sure to take a look in OnCampus at the LHSN Student Handbook. It contains valuable information regarding academic policies, discipline, attendance, etc. After logging into OnCampus, click on “Groups,” “LHSN Parents,” “Bulletin Board,” and then the Handbook under “Downloads.” (See article below if you have not logged into OnCampus yet.)

Recording Artists

For the third consecutive year, Crusader choir members were asked by CTA, (Christian Tools of Affirmation), Inc. in Fenton to participate in making a recording of an original Christmas song. CTA writes an annual Christmas service and has an original Christmas song composed and recorded. CTA then makes these services and the recorded song available to churches to use in their ministry free of charge. (See resources here.)

This year, the beautiful voices of Becca Roth (Jr.), Allie Johnston (Sr.), Lily Kate Burreson (Sr.), Hannah Russo (LN ’17), and Paige Liszewski (Sr.) will be heard in many churches all over the world through their recording of God’s Promise Came True. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time in the studio last May. Listen to the finished product using this link.

Parent involvement is crucial to the success of our students. Please make every effort to attend Back-to-School for Parents!

Calling All Moms!

LHSN is such a great place for our teenagers to be, but it is also a great place for you! This marks year 4 for LHSN Mothers’ Club – come check us out! I’m so glad that when Max was a freshman I went to my first meeting. Not being Lutheran, I was terrified and knew no one, but I was warmly greeted with open arms and I have developed cherished life-long friendships. As President this year, my goal is outreach….we need and want YOU to get involved – not just for your student but for yourself. Come grow with us! First meeting is Aug. 19 sharply at 9 am, room 102.
–Georgia Rossel

Scripture Verse

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Cross Copy Weekly – Aug. 4, 2017

Principal’s Posting

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! On Monday morning, Aug. 7, we will greet all our new Crusaders – freshmen and transfer students – and enjoy a day of getting acquainted with each other and with LHSN, distributing iPads, eating ice cream, and gearing up for a fun, successful school year. For lunch, students should either bring lunch from home, purchase food with cash, or purchase a meal card (see below). Please have your student here by 7:45 and plan pickup for 2:00 (unless staying for sports).

Wednesday, Aug. 9, is the official start of the year, so it’s “all hands on deck!” Returning students and teachers will be happy to see each other again for a fresh start on learning and growing. Wednesday is a normal school day, 8:00-3:00, with all 8 blocks meeting.

The theme for the new school year is “His Example” from St. Paul’s letter to Timothy (I Timothy 4:12), Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. We celebrate God’s gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus, and take confidence that we can now be an example to others as a result of His saving work in us. We pray that all of us at LHSN will be bold examples of our faith throughout the year.

Reminders

•  All new students must have a Physical Exam form and Shot Record (dated after 2/1/17) on file for the start of school. Every student must submit the Annual School Health Information form. All forms are available as downloads from the Parent Resource section of the website here.

•  Meal cards are available from the cafeteria manager with a $50 initial deposit (increments of $25 thereafter), payable by cash, check, or money order. Make payable to “Food Service Consultants.”

•  Cell phones may not be used and shouldn’t be visible in the building between 7:50 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Back-to-School for Parents!

Every year LHSN invites all current parents to a “Back-to-School” afternoon, giving them the opportunity to experience their student’s schedule and meet his/her teachers. This year the session will be on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2:00-5:00. All parents are urged to attend!

It’s not too late!

The Lutheran North Mothers’ Club is kicking off the new school year with an evening of painting, fellowship, and fun TONIGHT, Friday, Aug. 4 at 7 pm at Lutheran North. Mr. Mike Lorenz will lead us in creating our masterpiece! Cost of $40 per person is payable at the door. Each person can bring a snack. Mothers’ Club will provide wine and lemonade. Come join the fun and meet other Moms!

Viewing the Eclipse

The total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 is particularly rare because it’s the first time the path of totality exclusively crosses the continental United States from coast to coast since June 8, 1918, and St. Louis was not included in that path. Lutheran North students and faculty will be viewing the Great American Eclipse on Aug. 21. Safety glasses will be provided for everyone. A special daily schedule will allow for all students and faculty to go outdoors three times during the eclipse in order to see it at different stages.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime event and certainly not-to-be-missed. Watch for more details regarding that day and how our students will be participating.

Every Woman, Everywhere!

The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine are offering mammograms to women age 40 and over at no cost to women who qualify. A van will be on the parking lot of LHSN on Friday, Sept. 29, 8:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Call for an appointment: 314-747-7222 or 1-800-600-3606. Yes! You do need a mammogram!
