Cross Copy Weekly – Aug. 31, 2018

Parent/Teacher Conferences

First semester teacher conferences will be Thursday, Sept. 27, between 1:00 and 8:00. All parents are invited to make appointments with any of their child’s teachers. Parents of students who are experiencing any difficulty in class are especially encouraged to request conference time with the respective teacher. Parents who have students with failing grades are expected to make an appointment with that teacher. Current grade status is always available through OnCampus.

Appointments must be made in advance by using the link at the end of this article to access an electronic form. Conferences must be requested by Sept. 14.

After conferences are requested, we will schedule appointments. An appointment post card giving time and room location of conferences will be mailed to homes on Sept. 21. Watch for it in your mailbox!

We will have two half-days of school on Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Sept. 28. Dismissal will be at 11:30 both days; please make arrangements for your student to be taken home. Athletic practices will generally be held immediately following classes on both days. Please check with coaches.

Are You Using OnCampus?

We encourage parents to visit the OnCampus website often to stay up-to-date on what is happening with their student and at school. Parents are able to view assignments, grades, attendance, sports schedules, etc.

To log into OnCampus, returning parents should use the same login as last year. New families should use the same login as they used to apply for enrollment. (The user ID always starts out as first and last name as one word, all lower case. Users can change it as desired.) A link to OnCampus can be found on the school website, lhsnstl.org,  at the top of the home page.

Crusader Robotics

On Saturday, Aug. 25, the LHSN Robotics Team attended the St. Louis Robotics Training Camp at Florissant Valley Community College. Each team member attended four 40-minute sessions in addition to the Introduction Presentation. Sessions covered various forms of programming, mechanical design, electrical design, compilation of an engineering notebook, and strategies to use for the season and for a meet. They also learned about outreach into the community.

This was the first event in Missouri for the upcoming season and was well attended with about 300 registrants. LHSN was represented by Tony Walker, Deaven Crigler, Carl Walker, (pictured above) and Kemi Omolayo. The team plans to attend the Season Kickoff event at UMSL on Sept. 8.

Any student interested in working with the Robotics Team is welcome to attend one of the meetings. The team meets each Monday and Wednesday at 3:15 in room 201. Join the fun!

Pep Zone at LHSN!

Fox2 News in the Morning will televise Pep Zone at Lutheran North on Friday, Sept. 14! It will be an early morning pep rally, but please encourage your student to be at school by 6:00 a.m. that day. We need all students at this event, which is sure to be a blast!  We look forward to all Crusaders showing their school pride to the rest of St. Louis.

We know high school students love food, so we will serve FREE breakfast to all who come to Pep Zone. Thank you for your support!

International Opportunity

Are you interested in a 7-week life enriching experience? LHSN is looking for short-term host families for Guatemalan exchange students. An informational meeting will be held at LHSN on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6:00 p.m. Please come and learn more about the “Faces & Cultures” program.

For further information, please contact Lu Vitale, Coordinator at lu.caceres@facesandcultures.com.

Phone Call or Note

Every absence from school requires a note or phone call from the parent. If your son/daughter is absent from school, you must call the school office, 314-389-3100, by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence to give the reason for the absence. If we do not hear from a parent regarding an absence, the student is marked “Unexcused” which results in a grade deduction.

Absences planned in advance should be reported to the office as soon as they are known. That way, students can be given a “yellow slip” to show to their teachers and discuss work that will be missed.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep track of all of our students and have accurate attendance records.

Welcome New Faculty/Staff

God continues to bless Lutheran North with outstanding teachers and staff members. The following are new to LHSN this year. Please join us in welcoming the following, pictured from left to right:

Dr. Savannah Francois – Spanish Teacher
Mr. James Mitchell – Academic Lab Supervisor and Administrative Support Coordinator
Mrs. Cherae Bullard – Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher

Crusaders “Give” and “Take”

Something new has been added to the counseling center hallway! Please check out the “Give and Take” bulletin board, provided by the LHSN Culture Committee.

The “give” side of the board has suggestions for how Crusaders can do simple acts of kindness around the school for peers or teachers. Tag @lhsnstl on your social media post and Lutheran North will share your #Crusader Kindness with others.

The “take” side has many Bible verses for different emotions or situations Crusaders might be struggling with. Crusaders simply take a slip and read a helpful message from God’s Word.

Ask your student if he/she has seen the board and encourage him/her to make use of it!

Students Sink Their Teeth into Math!

Last week, students in Mrs. Roth’s Honors Geometry class were asked to use graham crackers, pull ‘n’ peel licorice, pieces of gummy worms, and toothpicks to model various Geometry terms and postulates. Using their iPads, they took pictures of their creations and labeled them. After completing those tasks, groups shared their photos. As a class, Crusaders discussed the pictures, making any corrections and prompting further questions.

Great communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity in a Christian environment – all hallmarks of the 5 C’s of 21st century education! As an added bonus, it was something the students could really sink their teeth into – yum!

Breakfast is Served!

Lutheran North’s cafeteria staff now offers hot breakfast items every morning from 7:15-7:45. The inexpensive a-la-carte menu includes egg sandwiches, pancakes and waffles, fresh fruit, continental pastries, etc. Students can pay with their lunch card or cash.

Cross Copy Weekly – Aug. 17, 2018

For Parents!

All parents of current students are urged to attend our annual Back-to-School event on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 19. Following an introduction in the gym at 2:00, parents will follow their student’s complete schedule. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit your student’s classrooms, meet teachers, find out what your child will be doing this semester, have a snack and mingle with other parents!

When you come on Sunday, bring a device – phone, tablet, or your student’s iPad – to learn more about OnCampus.

Will Your Child Play Sports at LHSN?

Parents of ALL students who plan to participate in sports ANYTIME during the 2018-2019 school year are required to attend a meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 6:00 pm in the gym. Students are not required to attend, but are allowed to do so. Parents MUST be in attendance! Thanks for your cooperation.

Crusader Mothers’ Club

Ladies, please join us at our first Mother’s Club meeting for Dinner and DevotionsThursday, Aug. 23 at 6:30 pm. We’d love to have a large crowd of Crusader moms, grandmothers, aunts, and friends! Contact Heather Lankford with any questions, 314-337-6258.

Recording Artists

For the fourth consecutive year, Crusader choir members were asked by Christian Tools of Affirmation (CTA, Inc.) to make a recording of an original Christmas song at Shock City Studios. CTA writes an annual Christmas service and has an original Christmas song composed and recorded. CTA then makes these services and the recorded song available to churches to use in their ministry free of charge.

This year, the beautiful voices of Paige Liszewski, Becca Roth, Lily Kate Burreson, and Allie Johnston will be heard in many churches all over the world through their recording of Christ the Savior is Born. Listen to their recording here!

Project Graduation ’19 Needs YOU!

All junior and senior parents are invited to the first meeting of the Project Graduation ’19 Committee. Lots of participation is necessary for this important event to be a success for our graduating seniors. Please join in on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 6:00 pm, in the Counseling Center.

The LHSN counseling department is helping seniors get a nice early start on their post-graduation plans. Last week, seniors and their parents enjoyed a barbecue dinner and a brief college presentation to help them start thinking about what needs to be done. This past Monday, seniors were invited to an Application Workshop as a voluntary option to start the process. Pictured are Zach Roeglin, Katie Laffold, Aaron Fackler, Jonah Koch, Arianna Ross, Raevyn Ferguson, and Heaven Davis who came, worked hard, had pizza for lunch, and left with a feeling of accomplishment. Other students participated throughout the day.

Juniors and Seniors should check out the Colleges That Change Lives College Fair next Tuesday, Aug. 21, 7:00 pm, at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac.  Colleges That Change Lives is a consortium of liberal arts colleges that do not necessarily have “big names” but are awesome schools that emphasize student-teacher dialogue, close sense of community, collaborative learning, values and student growth.  Check it out here!

Also, seniors should note the deadline of Aug. 29 to order Senior Jerseys. Order forms are available in the Counseling Center.

Senior parents should mark their calendars for the College Financial Aid Night – Wednesday, Sept. 19, 7:00 pm.

Note the School-wide Testing Day at LHSN on Tuesday, Oct. 2. It is important for all 9-11 grade students to be in attendance and on time that morning when:

Cross Country Scavenger Hunt

Coach Prahlow makes sure Crusader Cross Country runners don’t get bored while they run by taking the team to various locations for practice. They run on the Katy Trail, at Spanish Lake Park, SIU-Edwardsville, and in Forest Park, among others. In keeping with their annual tradition on the first day of school, the Cross Country team enjoyed a scavenger hunt in Forest Park. Team members had so much fun they forgot about the heat!

Beware: I-70 & Lucas-Hunt

Please be aware that the recent road improvements at the I-70 and Lucas-Hunt intersection have changed traffic flow! A northbound left turn lane onto I-70 West has been added, so traffic now merges from the north AND south onto the entrance ramp to I-70 West. Be careful when using that ramp!

Work in that area is ongoing. We will alert you when upcoming closures and changes are announced.

Scripture Verse

and whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the lord jesus, giving thanks to god the father through him” colossians 3:17

Cross Copy Weekly – Aug. 10, 2018

Principal’s Posting

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! The theme for the new school year is “Bold in Christ” from 2 Timothy 1:7, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” We celebrate God’s gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus, and take confidence that He has also given us both power and love to be BOLD for His kingdom and an example to others. This year’s banner, pictured here, was designed by senior Brandon Campbell. Last spring, all LHSN students were invited to submit an original design depicting the theme Bible verse for the upcoming school year and Brandon’s design was chosen.

On Tuesday morning, Aug. 14, we will greet all our new Crusaders – freshmen and transfer students – and enjoy a day of getting acquainted with each other and with LHSN, eating ice cream, and gearing up for a fun, successful school year. For lunch, students should either bring lunch from home, purchase food with cash, or purchase a meal card (see below). Please have your student here by 7:45 and pick him/her up at 2:00 (unless staying for sports).

Wednesday, Aug. 15, is the official start of the year, so it’s “all hands on deck!” Returning students and teachers will be happy to see each other again for a fresh start on learning and growing. Wednesday is a normal school day, 7:55-3:00, with all 8 blocks meeting.

Important Reminders

•  NEW students must have a physical dated after Feb. 1 and submit form to the school nurse, along with a shot record, before they can attend school.

•  ALL students must turn in the “Health Information Form” on or before the first day of school.

Meal cards are available from the cafeteria manager with a $50 initial deposit (increments of $25 thereafter), payable by cash, check, or money order. Make payable to “Food Service Consultants.”

•  Gym uniforms ($14) and locks ($5) can be purchased from the bookstore, open after school until 3:30 Aug. 15-17. Thereafter, the bookstore is only open Thursday mornings from 7:20-7:50.

•  Cell phones may not be used, and should not be visible, between 7:50 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

•  Dress Code change this year: A uniform polo must be worn at all times, including under approved spirit wear pullovers and crewneck sweatshirts. (The only exception is that seniors do not need a polo under their senior jerseys.)

Back-to-School for Parents!

All current parents are invited to come Back-to-School on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2:00-5:00 to experience their student’s class schedule, meet all of his/her teachers, and get important information!

We urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to find out about your child’s classes and be able to put teachers’  faces with their names. This is an important step in becoming informed parents who are actively involved in their child’s success at LHSN.

Immunization Requirements

All incoming NEW students entering grades 9-12 are required by the Missouri state immunization law to submit a complete and up-to-date shot record to the school nurse by the first day of school. According to the Missouri state law, a student may not attend classes without proper immunization, so documentation of the shots (shot record) must be given to the school nurse by Aug. 15. Students who have not submitted a shot record will not be able to attend school, according to the law.

All SENIOR students (Class of ’19) are now required by the new Missouri immunization law to have a second Meningococcal vaccine if the first vaccine was received before 16 years of age. A letter with this new requirement was mailed in spring to the parents/guardians of upcoming senior students. Any senior student who has not received the shot or does not submit documentation of having received the shot will not be able to attend school, according to the law.

For your convenience, immunizations are available from the St. Louis County Department of Public Health on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m. Patients are encouraged to bring along immunization records. The two north area locations are:

North Central Community Health Center: 314-615-9700
4000 Jennings Station Road, 63121

John C. Murphy Health Center: 314-615-0500
6121 N. Hanley Road, 63134

If you have any questions regarding your student’s immunization records, please call LHSN Nurse, Jane Mark, at 833-2937.
