Cross Copy Weekly – Aug. 31, 2018

Parent/Teacher Conferences

First semester teacher conferences will be Thursday, Sept. 27, between 1:00 and 8:00. All parents are invited to make appointments with any of their child’s teachers. Parents of students who are experiencing any difficulty in class are especially encouraged to request conference time with the respective teacher. Parents who have students with failing grades are expected to make an appointment with that teacher. Current grade status is always available through OnCampus.

Appointments must be made in advance by using the link at the end of this article to access an electronic form. Conferences must be requested by Sept. 14.

After conferences are requested, we will schedule appointments. An appointment post card giving time and room location of conferences will be mailed to homes on Sept. 21. Watch for it in your mailbox!

We will have two half-days of school on Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Sept. 28. Dismissal will be at 11:30 both days; please make arrangements for your student to be taken home. Athletic practices will generally be held immediately following classes on both days. Please check with coaches.

Are You Using OnCampus?

We encourage parents to visit the OnCampus website often to stay up-to-date on what is happening with their student and at school. Parents are able to view assignments, grades, attendance, sports schedules, etc.

To log into OnCampus, returning parents should use the same login as last year. New families should use the same login as they used to apply for enrollment. (The user ID always starts out as first and last name as one word, all lower case. Users can change it as desired.) A link to OnCampus can be found on the school website, lhsnstl.org,  at the top of the home page.

Crusader Robotics

On Saturday, Aug. 25, the LHSN Robotics Team attended the St. Louis Robotics Training Camp at Florissant Valley Community College. Each team member attended four 40-minute sessions in addition to the Introduction Presentation. Sessions covered various forms of programming, mechanical design, electrical design, compilation of an engineering notebook, and strategies to use for the season and for a meet. They also learned about outreach into the community.

This was the first event in Missouri for the upcoming season and was well attended with about 300 registrants. LHSN was represented by Tony Walker, Deaven Crigler, Carl Walker, (pictured above) and Kemi Omolayo. The team plans to attend the Season Kickoff event at UMSL on Sept. 8.

Any student interested in working with the Robotics Team is welcome to attend one of the meetings. The team meets each Monday and Wednesday at 3:15 in room 201. Join the fun!

Pep Zone at LHSN!

Fox2 News in the Morning will televise Pep Zone at Lutheran North on Friday, Sept. 14! It will be an early morning pep rally, but please encourage your student to be at school by 6:00 a.m. that day. We need all students at this event, which is sure to be a blast!  We look forward to all Crusaders showing their school pride to the rest of St. Louis.

We know high school students love food, so we will serve FREE breakfast to all who come to Pep Zone. Thank you for your support!

International Opportunity

Are you interested in a 7-week life enriching experience? LHSN is looking for short-term host families for Guatemalan exchange students. An informational meeting will be held at LHSN on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6:00 p.m. Please come and learn more about the “Faces & Cultures” program.

For further information, please contact Lu Vitale, Coordinator at lu.caceres@facesandcultures.com.

Phone Call or Note

Every absence from school requires a note or phone call from the parent. If your son/daughter is absent from school, you must call the school office, 314-389-3100, by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence to give the reason for the absence. If we do not hear from a parent regarding an absence, the student is marked “Unexcused” which results in a grade deduction.

Absences planned in advance should be reported to the office as soon as they are known. That way, students can be given a “yellow slip” to show to their teachers and discuss work that will be missed.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep track of all of our students and have accurate attendance records.

Project Graduation ’19

Thanks for the awesome turnout of interested parents on Tuesday night!  Chalana Ferguson will chair the Committee this year and we are very grateful for her commitment. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 18, 6:00, in the Counseling Center.  All junior and senior parents are encouraged to attend!

The Counseling Office encourages ALL juniors to attend one or more of the college fairs taking place in St. Louis; the most comprehensive one is the fair at St. Louis University on Oct. 21.  A college fair is a great way to begin your college search! Click here for a list.

Senior parents! Mark your calendars for the College Financial Aid NightWednesday, Sept. 19, 7:00 pm.

Note the School-wide Testing Day at LHSN on Tuesday, Oct. 2. It is important for all 9-11 grade students to be in attendance and on time that morning when:
     9th graders take the PreACT
     10th graders take the PreACT
11th graders take an official ACT
12th graders have the day off – a great time for a college visit!

A detailed letter regarding this testing was mailed to homes this week and is available here.
