Cross Copy Weekly – Oct. 12, 2018

Testing Day!

Tuesday, Oct. 16, will be testing day for all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Students should be at school no later than 7:55, as testing will begin promptly at 8:00. Juniors will take an official ACT (payment of $44.50 required), and freshmen and sophomores will take the PreACT (cost covered by LHSN). Seniors will have the day off to visit colleges and work on applications.

Students should bring #2 pencils (not mechanical), an eraser, and calculator – and be on time! A good night’s sleep and breakfast are recommended. Cell phones will not be allowed in testing rooms.

Dismissal will be when the test is over – approximately 11:30 for 9th and 10th graders, 11:45 for juniors (unless the student qualifies for extra time). No lunches will be served. Please plan rides accordingly.

Chamber of Commerce “Student of the Month”

Lutheran North is a member of both the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce and the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. During the school year, the Maryland Heights Chamber recognizes area students for outstanding achievement in academics, leadership, and extra-curricular activities. Each month, LHSN administrators select a Crusader they feel is deserving of this recognition and the chosen student is honored at the monthly luncheon meeting.

This week, Tom Xu was recognized as a “Student of the Month” at the Maryland Heights Chamber luncheon held at Syberg’s. As you can see, it was “Hockey Day” for the Chamber. Congrats to Tom!

Congratulations to Coach Prahlow!

The Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association recently selected Coach Jim Prahlow for induction into their Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony and dinner will take place on Friday, Dec. 7 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, MO. Anyone wishing to attend may contact Jamie Schieber (Custom Meeting Planners) at 573-445-2965 or Jamie@custommeetingplanners.com. Tickets are $35 each.

As pictured, the Crusader Cross Country team is very happy for Coach Prahlow! The LHSN community joins them in congratulating Coach Prahlow on this honor.

Immersed in History

Nineteen Crusaders attended the first annual SLU History Immersion Day for ACC/1818 students taking US History to 1865. The LHSN students participated along with 300 others. Genesis Daniels won an attendance prize of SLU socks!

The groups enjoyed simulations about the French Revolution and the Peloponnessian Wars; listened to a description of the rise of Fascism in Europe; and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some also saw the archeological dig at Camp Jackson on the Frost Campus, the site of the Confederate militia’s encampment prior to Nathaniel Lyon’s capture of the entire group.

While the students were busily engaged, Mr. Prahlow and Mr. Mac attended a professional development seminar dealing chiefly with comparative learning styles reflecting current trends in history education.

Angel’s Apples are Back!

Project Graduation is taking orders for those marvelous Angel’s Apples through Friday, Oct. 19. Delivery will be the following Friday, Oct. 26 (3-6 p.m.). Order forms were distributed to all students on Tuesday and extra forms are available in the main office. You may also download one here.

These apples are available with 24 different delectable coatings and are truly outstanding as dessert or as gifts. If you haven’t ever tried them, we recommend you do so!

Project Graduation needs your help! Please support our fundraisers with your own participation and by promoting them to your friends and co-workers. Thanks to all of the families who dined out at McDonald’s – you are greatly appreciated!

All parents, particularly junior and senior parents, are invited to the next Project Graduation meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 6:00 p.m. in the Counseling Center. Note that the November meeting will be on WEDNESDAY, Nov. 14 (a change from the original schedule). Please come!

Seniors: The FAFSA became available on October 1st! Students received an email from Mrs. Burreson about what is needed to complete the FAFSA. An account can be set up at fafsa.ed.gov or by using the myStudent Aid app. Both parent and student need a FSA ID and may set them up at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid.

Keep working on applications. Keep in mind the goal to have all applications finished by the end of October. Once finished, start on scholarship search with Naviance, Fastweb.com, and the financial pages of college websites.

Senior Sweat orders have been distributed to seniors. Please see the order form for details. The first order is due with payment by Monday, Oct. 15.

Juniors: Tuesday, Oct. 16, is for most their first official ACT. Make sure your student is present and ready to go!

Students should be prepping for the ACT with their Method Test Prep account.

Students should start adding colleges to their “Colleges I’m Thinking About” list in Naviance… and keep their grades high!

Freshmen and Sophomores: On Tuesday, Oct 16, all 9th and 10th grade students will take the PreACT. This is a great opportunity for students to become familiar with the process and receive an assessment.

Flu Shots Here!

Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect you and your family from the flu. The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends that people get vaccinated by the end of October, if possible. You can join the effort to fight flu by getting your flu vaccine and encouraging people to protect themselves and their family by doing the same.

Flu shots for the seasonal flu will be offered by Schnucks Pharmacy at LHSN on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 1:00-4:00 pm in the Main Office/Health Room. Flu shots will be available to all students, family members, faculty, and staff over the age of 13 years. A parental consent form must be completed for ages 13-17.

Please sign up for a flu shot in the main office and pick up a consent form by Tuesday, Oct. 16. The consent form must be completed to receive a flu shot. Your pharmacy insurance card information can be entered on the form or you can bring your pharmacy insurance card with you when the shot is received. You may print the form here and call the office, (314)389-3100, to reserve your spot.
