summer enrichmentWay to Go, Crusaders!

Lutheran North students do not all “take the summer off.” Many Crusaders applied for and were accepted into academic or leadership programs, enrolled in summer enrichment classes, attended prestigious sports or scouting camps, or volunteered their services.

We commend all of these for being eager to learn, do, and expand their horizons! For a complete listing of students who reported their summer activities to Mrs. McFarland in the Counseling Center, click here.

Seniors Lead by Example

Each month at the Senior Breakfast, some seniors are recognized for displaying the five leadership characteristics taught at the Leadership Retreat: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Encourage the Heart, Enable Others to Act, and Challenge the Process. Seniors can be nominated by their teachers or their peers.

Sr.Ld.9:16At the September breakfast, the following seniors were recognized for various leadership actions: (front row) Taylor Ewing, Gabbi Gilmore, Precious Clark, (back row) Grayson Knight, Jake Thompson, Eric Webster, Matt Zeuschel, Olaoluwa Animashaun, and Lloyd Abernathy. Congratulations, leaders!

SchoolMessengerWhen LHSN needs to communicate with parents, we use SchoolMessenger – a system that sends out voice, email, and text messaging using the contact information we have on file for you. But you have options!

Please watch this new SchoolMessenger video that explains how parents can set their preferences for school notifications. The video is only 70 seconds long and gives you the website you’ll need to select your preferences. Click here.

FIRST TechRobotics at LHSN!

Lutheran North is adding to its already extensive extra-curricular program by starting up a Robotics Club. On Aug. 25, all students were invited to the Crusader Cafe to see a FIRST Technology Challenge (FTC) recruitment demonstration. Two established teams – Worm Gear Warriors from Edwardsville High School and Cyber Ducks from Marquette High School – set up their robots and showed what they can do. They explained what robotics is all about, fielded questions, and let the Crusaders try their hand at operating the robots.IMG_7174

IMG_7170FIRST Tech Challenge gives middle and high school students and their adult mentors the opportunity to work and create together to solve a common problem. All skill levels are welcomed and needed, technical and non-technical. At LHSN, Mrs. Hill and Mr. Kersten will serve as coaches and Boeing will furnish mentors. Student applications were due by today. Any adults interested in helping or sponsoring should please contact Mrs. Hill. Let the fun (and learning) begin!

I want to thank all Crusader parents who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the Back-to-School Afternoon. We intended for the session to be both beneficial and enjoyable! Faculty members spend much time and effort to help parents understand what their children are doing on a daily basis at LHSN. They greatly appreciate parents who are interested!

If you haven’t already done so, please become familiar with the LHSN Handbook. It contains valuable information regarding our academic policies, discipline, and various procedures. The table of contents makes it easy to find what you’re looking for. The Handbook is available as a download through the OnCampus bulletin board and also from the LHSN website.

Phil. 4-6Tip of the Week:
Prayer Requests

One of the unique characteristics of Lutheran North is that it is a worshipping community. Every day we take time out for Chapel to hear His Word of forgiveness, to offer our thanks and praise, and to bring our individual and community cares before Him.

If you have a prayer request you would like us to include, simply send an e-mail to prayers@lhsnstl.org. We will gladly include it in our chapel service prayers. Students have been invited to submit prayer requests and some have already done so. What a blessing it is to be able to pray together!

volunteersCrusader Servant Volunteers

The Lutheran North volunteer program has been established to engage parents, school faculty and staff, and the general community in supporting educational and extra-curricular activities through opportunities to serve and build a stronger community. The program will require mandatory participation by Lutheran North families, while being flexible and offering a wide range of service opportunities.

Each family will be required to volunteer 10 hours of service each year. Many of you are already actively involved, volunteering for Men’s Club, Mothers’ Club, Project Graduation and many other options. These current volunteer opportunities are part of this program. There is also a “buyout” available for families who wish to pay instead of volunteering. The buyout will be $250 for the 2016-2017 school year. If you do not complete 10 hours during the school year, you will be billed at the rate of $25/hour for each hour not completed. If you have questions, please contact Becky Klotzer at bklotzer@lhsnstl.org or 314-833-2942 or Jim Borgmann at 314-833-2945. We will be working together to further strengthen our Lutheran North family!

Signing up will be done easily and electronically using “Sign Up Genius.” An invitation from Sign Up Genius will be emailed to Crusader families today (8/26) and will include football and volleyball concessions and many other upcoming opportunities. Look for the email from Becky Klotzer in your inbox today!

Banner '16Principal’s Posting

Today is the official beginning of the 2016-2017 academic term at Lutheran North. Our theme for the year is “Alive in Christ,” based on Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Crusaders celebrate that Christ gives us life, enabling us to live for Him now and for eternity!Installation 16

Our opening chapel service today was led by Rev. Matt Roeglin, pastor of Blessed Savior Lutheran Church and father of an LHSN graduate and a current sophomore. Rev. Roeglin’s message to the Crusader community focused on our identity in Christ. The service also included installation and induction of the four faculty members new to LHSN this year. (See article below.)

thank you copy 3Lutheran Resale Shop

As you may know, the Lutheran Resale Shop has graciously offered to be the source for used LHSN uniform items and gives the proceeds for sales back to LHSN. Thankfully, many families have donated no longer needed, still-in-good-shape uniform clothing which can be purchased at very minimal prices at the shop. Mrs. Marlene Heislen, who voluntarily runs the Lutheran Resale Shop, recently brought LHSN a check for $1,250 from uniform sales. All of these funds will be used to benefit Lutheran North students and programs.

The Resale Shop is located at 6701 West Florissant, across from Knodel’s Bakery. It is open 10:00-3:00 Monday through Saturday. Proceeds also support Lutheran Senior Services and Lutheran Family & Children’s Services.

What a wonderful blessing the Lutheran Resale Shop is – both for the service they provide to families, and for their willingness to partner with Lutheran North!

CTA recording '16-2Recording Artists

For the second consecutive year, Crusader choir members were asked by CTA (Christian Tools of Affirmation), Inc. in Fenton to participate in making an original recording. CTA writes an annual Christmas service and composes an original Christmas song and then makes them available to churches to use in their ministry.

This year, the beautiful voices of Paige Liszewski (Jr.), Heather Meyer (LN ’15), Jenna Fackler (LN ’16), Lily Kate Burreson (Jr.), Dallis Johnson (Sr.), and Alexa Halliburton (Jr.), pictured left to right, will be heard in many churches all over the world through this recording. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time in the studio last May. You can hear the finished product using this link.

jessicaCongratulations, Jessica!

Jessica Molden (sophomore) recently received a scholarship for an essay she wrote about the significance and importance of having a police officer for a parent. The scholarship was awarded by the St. Louis Police Wives’ Association and the Margaret Hacker Scholastic Assistance Program. Jessica, along with the other recipients, was honored at a celebration dinner on July 21. We’re proud of you, Jessica.

DSC_0009Congratulations to the Crusader Girls’ Soccer Team on receiving the Gold Award from the Lutheran All-American Association (LAAA) for completing the entire 2015-16 season without receiving either a yellow or red card.

Only seven girls’ soccer teams from among the nearly 200 Lutheran high schools in the USA and Canada received the Gold Team Ethics Award.  This honor is awarded annually to recognize teams based on activity during their high school season. Recipients are commended for exhibiting fair play, sporting behavior, and adherence to the laws of the game.

In addition, Crusader sophomore Rayonna Pollvogt was named 2nd team All-American by the LAAA.

take a lookNew Look!

As Lutheran North continues to explore new ways to serve our families, students, and alumni, we have given our website and Cross Copy Weekly a fresh look! We hope this will help you find important information quicker and easier.

As parents, the information you rely on can be found by clicking “Parents” on the menu at the top of every page. You can also access onCampus and its resources by clicking “My LHSN” in the same menu. If you can’t find something that was on the old website, you can use the search bar.

You will also notice a new look for the Cross Copy Weekly newsletter. This will continue to be emailed every Friday during the school year. You can access the main Lutheran North website by clicking “LHSN” at the top of the page. You can also access the full list of recently sent Cross Copy newsletters by clicking on the archives or the month and year, displayed on the right side of the page.

If you have any questions or suggestions on how this website can serve you better, please let us know by asking us online.

Class of 2020Welcome, New Students!

We are excited to see how the class of Crusader freshmen has come together! Only a few openings remain in the Class of 2020; if you know of someone who may be interested in enrollment, let us know, or send them our way ASAP!

Our new students and families seem quite anxious to join the LHSN community and get involved in everything that goes on here. We encourage returning students and families to welcome them warmly and make them feel at home.

Just a few reminders of details that need to be taken care of if you haven’t already done so (with the person’s name to contact if you need any assistance):

• Schedule classes (Becky Klotzer)
• Take math placement test (Becky Klotzer)
• Schedule iPad orientation (Donna McFarland)
• Get a physical and turn in health forms (Donna McFarland)

We look forward to seeing all new students on Thursday, August 11, at 7:55 a.m. for orientation. All the adults in the building want to make students feel at ease; encourage your student to ask for help if he or she needs it.

physicalsSports Physicals for Returning* Students

All students planning to play sports anytime during the 2016-2017 school year must have a current physical (dated after Feb. 1, 2016) to try out, practice, or play. This is a state requirement each year.

Once again, LHSN is offering the opportunity to get a physical here at Lutheran North. Dr. Tony Miller with Esquire Sports Medicine will be completing sports physicals at Lutheran North on Tuesday, July 19 from 11:00 to 3:00 in room 111. Cost for a physical is $20, payable by cash or check made payable to Esquire Sports Medicine.

*Note: All incoming freshmen and transfer students need to obtain their physicals from their private physicians.

Award of ExcellenceMSHSAA Awards

Lutheran North is proud to announce that five spring sports teams earned Scholastic Achievement Awards from the Missouri State High School Activities Association. All of these Crusaders have successfully balanced academics and extracurricular activities. Way to go, Crusader athletes!

Help Us Find the Right Host Families

Lutheran North is looking for families to host our international students in their homes. Hosting an international student is a life-changing experience, and host families are rewarded with a $750 monthly stipend. With your help, we hope to give international students the chance to have their lives changed by God by receiving a Lutheran education here in St. Louis. Int.Stu

If you are not able to host a student, you can still help these students by finding qualified host families for them! Please encourage your friends and neighbors to contact LPI. Prospective host families should mention your name to make you eligible for the $500 incentive. Only families who complete the registration process and become hosts of an international student will earn the incentive.

To start the process of becoming a host family, call Jessica Pignataro at LPI at (203) 680-9982.
